The Good Agricultural Practice for Protection of Waters Regulations 2014 give legal effect in Ireland to the Nitrates Directive and to our Nitrates Action Programme (NAP) and the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government (DHPLG) is the lead Department in this regard. The Directive requires all member states to define set periods when the land application of fertiliser is not allowed.

Assessing suitability of Grass for harvesting as silage

There are two tests commonly carried out in Teagasc and Consultants offices on fresh grass samples taken in by farmers.  These are (a) Nitrates test and (b) Sugar test.  The Nitrates test is carried out using a test strip with colour changing to indicate nitrate level.  The sugar test is carried out using a refractometer to assess sugar levels in the juice of the grass.  Both of these tests are indicative and should not be regarded as being as accurate as a laboratory test.  Most of the commercial laboratories that test soil samples and silage samples also do Nitrates and Sugar tests on a same day basis.
